Hiroshi Tanahashi (棚橋弘至?) est un catcheur japonais né le 13 novembre 1976 à Ogaki dans la préfecture de Gifu.

Biographie

Avant de rejoindre les rings de lutte, Hiroshi Tanahashi était joueur de baseball dans son école. Il commence la lutte en entrant à l'université Ritsumeikan de Kyoto. La New Japan Pro Wrestling le repère et l'invite à s'entraîner dans le New Japan Dojo. Il fait fureur et entre alors dans le staff de la NJPW.

Carrière

New Japan Pro Wrestling

Tanahashi fait ses débuts en octobre 1999 contre Shinya Makabe. Il remporte de grandes victoires face à la légende de la lucha libre legend Negro Casas en juillet, 2000 et face à l'américain Scott Hall en septembre, 2001. Il participe au G-1 Climax 2002 (l'un des tournois les plus importants de la New Japan Pro Wrestling's) Tanahashi fait le tombé sur Kensuke Sasaki en seulement 2 minutes.

Ensuite, il forme une équipe avec Kenzo Suzuki sous le nom des Kings of the Hills. Cette équipe est populaire, mais un incident de la vie met fait à cette épopée. En novembre 2002, Tanahashi est attaqué par derrière par Hitomi Hara. Tanahashi est alors hospitalisé. Le 16 février 2003 Tanahshi remonte sur les rings et fait face à Manabu Nakanishi.

En 2003, Tanahashi remporte le U-30 Openweight Championship, en août 2004, il arrive en finale du G1 Climax et, en janvier 2005, il participe au Tokyo Dom à un match contre Shinsuke Nakamura. En 2005, Tanahashi participe au 15th SASUKE competition le 20 juillet. Il est éliminé dès le premier tour.

17 juillet 2006, Tanahashi remporte son premier titre IWGP Heavyweight Championship face au Giant Bernard dans la finale du titre vacant. Après avoir gardé la ceinture pendant 9 mois soit 270 jours, et avoir défendu son titre face à Taiyō Kea, Shinsuke Nakamura et d'autres, Tanahashi perd son titre face à Yūji Nagata, le 8 octobre 2007, il bat Yuji Nagata et récupère son titre. Le 4 janvier 2008, Tanahashi est battu au New Japan's annual Tokyo Dome show par Shinsuke Nakamura pour le titre IWGP Heavyweight.

le 4 janvier, Tanahashi bat son mentor Keiji Mutō et devient le 50th IWGP Heavyweight Champion, pour son troisième règne. Lors de Wrestling Kingdom V, il bat Satoshi Kojima et devient IWGP Heavyweight Champion. Lors de Attack on the East Coast Nuit 1, lui et Togi Makabe perdent contre Rhino et Charlie Haas. Lors de Attack on the East Coast Nuit 2, il bat Charlie Haas et conserve son titre. Lors de Attack on the East Coast Nuit 3, il bat Davey Richards. Lors de Dominion, il bat Hirooki Goto et conserve son titre. Lors de New Japan Soul, Il bat Giant Bernard et conserve son titre. Il participe au G1 Climax 2011 remportant 6 de ses neuf matchs, il finit deuxième car Naito, bien qu'à égalité avec lui, l'a battu le dernier jour. Le 19 septembre, au G1 Climax Special, il affronte et bat Shinsuke Nakamura, vainqueur du G1 Climax 2011. A Destruction '11, il conserve son titre contre Tetsuya Naito.

Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre

Tanahashi fait ses débuts en Amérique du Nord en 2005 quand lui et Nakamura vont au Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre à Mexico. Là, ils rencontrent Los Guerreros del Infierno et battent les tag team champions contre Rey Bucanero et Olímpico.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2006, 2008)

Il débute aux États-Unis le 15 janvier 2006. En faisant ses débuts à la Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. il est alors battu par A.J. Styles dans le payperview de la TNA Final Resolution.
