Le nom Hillel est d'origine sémitique, apparenté au Heylel babylonien ou canaanite, nom du dieu de l'étoile du matin.

Dans la Bible

Il apparaît dans Isaïe 14:12-14, où le prophète parle de la chute de Heylel ben Shakhar.
Selon la Jewish Encyclopedia[1], « il est évident que le prophète attribue au roi babylonien [Heylel] une fierté démesurée, qui sera suivie d'une chute ; le concept est emprunté à une légende populaire en connexion avec l'étoile du matin ». Le prophète ferait donc un jeu de mots entre le nom du roi et la divinité orgueilleuse, fils de la divinité caanite ou babylonienne de l'aube, Shakhar.
Dans la Septante, Heylel deviendra Éosphoros que Jérôme rendra dans sa Vulgate par Lucifer.

Dans la tradition juive

Utilisé sans autre précision, Hillel fait habituellement référence à :

Ce nom fut transmis à nombre de ses descendants, ainsi qu'à de nombreux rabbins, sages et penseurs juifs :

  • Hillel II (330–365 EC), fils de Juda Nessiah, petit-fils de , descendant de Hillel Hazaken. Il fut Nassi de la communauté juive de l'époque, et instaura le calendrier hébreu, encore en usage chez les Juifs rabbanites de nos jours.
  • (troisième siècle EC) Fils de Gamliel III, petit-fils de Juda Hanassi et frère cadet de Juda Nessiah. Ses sentences ont été consignées dans le Talmud, également sous le seul nom de Hillel d'où parfois une confusion avec l'Ancien.
  • Hillel ben Eliakim (XIIe siècle EC), rabbin et talmudiste grec. Parfois appelé « Hillel de Grèce » ou « Hillel de Roumanie ».
  • Hillel ben Naphtali Zevi (1615–1690), rabbin lituanien.
  • Hillel ben Samuel (c. 1220–c. 1295 CE), rabbin, médecin et philosophe italien, ayant vécu en plusieurs villes d'Italie, mort à Forlì.
  • Judah Loen Landau, (1866-1942), rabbin, dramaturge et poète né en Europe mais éduqué en Afrique du Sud écrivit sous le nom de plume de Hillel ben Shakhar (étant entendu que les Juifs, contrairement aux Chrétiens, ne font aucune association entre ce nom et Lucifer).
