Herbert Croly

Herbert Croly, né en 1869 à New York et mort en 1930, est un penseur politique et journaliste américain. Il a fondé avec Walter Lippmann et Walter Weyl le journal le New Republic.

Biographie

Sa mère Jane Cummingham Croly était une journaliste célèbre dont le nom de plume était Fanny Fern. Son père, également journaliste, était un disciple d'Auguste Comte et du positivisme. Il fit des études au City College de New York puis alla à Harvard où il fut l'élève de George Santayana.

Un homme de la classe moyenne américaine de la fin du 19° et du début du vingtième.

Œuvre

Croly est connu pour son livre The Promise of American Life (1909) un livre qui eut une certaine influence et sur le programme progressiste de New Nationalism développé par Theodore Roosevelt pour l'élection présidentielle américaine de 1912 et sur Woodrow Wilson.
