Archipel François-Joseph
L'archipel François-Joseph ou terre François-Joseph (en russe : Земля Франца Иосифа) est situé au nord de la Russie, dans l'océan Arctique au nord de la Nouvelle-Zemble et à l'est des îles Svalbard. Il fait partie de l'oblast d'Arkhangelsk. Il est constitué de 191 îles recouvertes de glace d'une surface totale de 16 134 km², et est majoritairement inhabité.
Avec des latitudes comprises entre 80.0° et 81.9° Nord, ce sont les îles les plus au nord du continent eurasiatique. Le point le plus au nord est le cap Fligely (mys Fligeli) sur l'île Rudolf (ostrov Rudolfa). L'archipel se situe à seulement 900 à 1 110 km du pôle Nord, plus près que toutes autres terres mis à part le Groenland et l'île d'Ellesmere au Canada.
L'archipel fut officiellement découvert en 1873 par les explorateurs polaires austro-hongrois Julius von Payer et Karl Weyprecht, qui le baptisèrent en l'honneur de l'empereur autrichien François-Joseph Ier. En 1926, l'Union soviétique prit le contrôle des îles, et quelques habitants s'y installèrent pour y mener des recherches ou dans un but militaire. L'archipel n'est accessible par bateau que pendant quelques semaines de l'été et pour cela nécessite un permis spécial.
