Adrian Stephen (1883-1948) est un écrivain et psychanalyste.

Biographie

Frère de Virginia Woolf, de Vanessa Bell et de Thoby Stephen, tous plus âgés que lui, Adrian Stephen est membre du Bloomsbury Group. Après le décès de leur père, Sir Leslie Stephen, en 1904, tous les quatre s'installent à Bloomsbury, où leur maison du 46, Gordon Square devint le noyau du Bloomsbury Group.

En 1914, il épouse Karin Costelloe, diplômée en philosophie et experte sur Bergson. Quand éclate la Première Guerre mondiale tous les deux se font objecteurs de conscience, comme Lytton Strachey et Leonard Woolf, et ils passent la guerre à travailler dans une ferme de l'Essex.

En 1936, Stephen décide de raconter en détail le canular du Dreadnought, auquel il avait pris part un quart de siècle plus tôt, et en fit un récit publié par la Hogarth Press.

Au début de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, la brutalité et l'antisémitisme des nazis exaspèrent Stephen au point qu'il abandonne son attitude pacifiste de la guerre précédente et s'enrôlant à l'âge de 60 ans, se porte volontaire comme médecin militaire et officier en 1942, peu après le suicide de sa sœur Virginie. Il meurt en 1948.

Psychanalyse

Après la guerre, ils s'intéressent à la psychanalyse et reçoivent une formation médicale à la demande d'Ernest Jones et, plus tard, avec James Glover, et ils obtiennent leur diplôme à la fin des années 1920. Lui et son épouse s'intéressent aux travaux de Sigmund Freud, et ils sont parmi les premiers psychanalystes britanniques.
