Dark Was the Night est une compilation datant de 2009 du label 4AD dont les bénéfices ont été reversés à la Red Hot Organization, une ONG dédiée à la récolte de fonds pour la lutte contre le SIDA. L'album est sorti le 17 février 2009[1]. Les producteurs sont Aaron et Bryce Dessner du groupe de rock The National. Le producteur exécutif est John Carlin, fondateur de la Red Hot Organization, les coproducteurs étant Paul Heck et Miwa Okumura.

Le titre de la compilation provient d'un titre de Blind Willie Johnson Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground (noire était la nuit, froid était le sol).

Pour le premier semestre 2009, la compilation a permis de récolter 668 358 dollars pour la lutte contre le SIDA[2].
