La ciguë aquatique (Cicuta virosa) est une plante herbacée, rhizomateuse et vivace de la famille des Apiacées.
Autres noms communs : ciguë vénéneuse, ciguë vireuse, persil des marais, cicutaire du Nord.
Synonyme : Cicuta mackenzieana Raup
Habitat
Sols humides, marécages, bords de rivière.
Toxicité
Cette plante contient de la cicutoxine, un alcool hautement insaturé très toxique qui agit comme antagoniste des récepteurs GABA. Le poison est surtout concentré dans le rhizome, qui peut être confondu avec celui d'une carotte sauvage.
L'un des poisons végétaux les plus connus est la cigüe vireuse employé dans l'Antiquité notamment pour commettre des crimes ou se donner la mort.
