Chaim Potok était un romancier américain et un rabbin (17 février 1929 - 23 juillet 2002). Fils de juifs polonais il fut élevé dans la stricte orthodoxie juive.
Il est l'auteur de L'Elu (1967), de Je m'appelle Asher Lev (1972), du Docteur Rubinov et du Livre des lumières.
Il lègue à l'université de Pennsylvanie où il avait étudié et enseigné ses papiers et documents[1].
