Catherine Opie (née en 1961 à Sandusky dans l'Ohio) est une photographe américaine, spécialisée dans les sujets LGBT et queer.
Biographie
Elle obtient une maîtrise d'art au California Institute of the Arts en 1988.
Elle est connue pour ses photographies de couples lesbiens, de personnes transgenres et de pratiquants SM comme Ron Athey. Des autoportraits tatoués et des photographies représentant le "cutting", dessins réalisés par coupures dans la peau, ont fait scandale. Les critiques rapprochent cépendant souvent ses portraits de l'art de la Renaissance flamande.
Depuis 2001, elle se consacre surtout au paysage : vues du ciel ou de l'océan, espaces d'architecture urbaine. Certaines de ses œuvres appartiennent à des musées à Los Angeles, Chicago, et Londres. Elle a enseigné la photographie à l'Université Yale (Connecticut) en 2000-2001, puis à l'Université de Californie à Los Angeles (UCLA).
