William Lane Craig

William Lane Craig

William Lane Craig (23 août 1949, à Peoria dans l'Illinois - ) est un philosophe analytique et théologien américain protestant évangélique. Il est actuellement "Research professor" de philosophie à la Talboot School of Theology (Biola University), à La Mirada, en Californie.

Ses centres d'intérêt sont la philosophie de l'espace et du temps, la philosophie de la religion et les preuves historiques quant à la résurrection de Jésus. En 1979, il a publié un livre revalorisant l'argument cosmologique du Kalâm.

Il est un des défenseurs les plus connus de la théologie naturelle et de l'Intelligent Design. Il participe à de nombreux débats publics entre universitaires sur l'existence de Dieu. Moliniste, il se place dans une perspective apologétique.

Parcours académique

Craig a obtenu un doctorat en philosophie en 1977 de l'université de Birmingham et un doctorat en théologie en 1984 de l'université de Munich.

Argument cosmologique du Kâlam

La plus importante contribution de William Lane Craig à la philosophie contemporaine tient à la revalorisation de l'argument cosmologique du Kalâm. Son argument se résume en trois points :

1. Tout ce qui commence à exister a une cause.
2. L'univers a commencé à exister.
3. L'univers a une cause.

Débats

William Lane Craig participe régulièrement à des débats publics universitaires sur l'existence de Dieu et les preuves historiques de la résurrection de Jésus. Ces débats lui valent une certaine notoriété aux États-Unis parmi le grand-public. Il a notamment été confronté à John Dominic Crossan (fondateur du Jesus Seminar) et au philosophe Antony Flew.
