William Bill Guarnere est né le 28 avril 1923. Il est le plus jeune d'une famille de 10 enfants originaires de la banlieue Sud de Philadelphia aux États-Unis.
Il s'engage dans le Citizen Military Training Corps avec l'encouragement de sa mère, qui voit dans l'armée la chance pour son fils de manger, de s'habiller, et d'être loin de la ville.
William Guarnere passe trois ans à la CMTC, mais le programme est annulé quand débute la guerre. Très intéressé et rapidement passionné par les parachutistes, il s'engage en 1942. Il était alors affecté à la 101e Aéroportée.
Le 5 juin 1944 en Angleterre, juste avant de partir pour la Normandie, il apprend que son frère a été tué au combat en Italie au Monte Cassino. Cela lui causa quelques problèmes en Normandie, la rage qu'il avait était tournée sur les Allemands, d'où provient son surnom Wild Bill.
Il sera grièvement blessé lors du siège de Bastogne pendant la Bataille des Ardennes.
