Le Syracusia était un navire marchand de 55 m de long, ce qui en ferait le plus grand navire de l'Antiquité[1].
Le Syracusia fut conçu, à l'initiative du tyran Hiéron II de Syracuse, par Archimède, le but étant de démontrer la puissance du tyran dans la perspective du déploiement agonistique des ambitions des souverains hellénistiques de l'époque[2]. Capable de transporter une charge de 2 000 tonnes, son gigantisme imposait de le remorquer à l'aide de plusieurs autres navires. Navire exceptionnel, sa démesure l'amena à ne faire qu'un voyage, de Syracuse en Sicile à Alexandrie en Égypte ptolémaïque.
