Big Brother and The Holding Company est un groupe de rock américain formé en 1965 et connu notamment pour avoir compté Janis Joplin parmi ses membres.

Historique

Le groupe a débuté avec Peter Albin (voix), Sam Andrew (guitare), James Gurley (guitare) et Chuck Jones (batterie) à San Francisco, dans un manoir victorien de l'oncle de Peter Albin situé au 1090 Page Street dans Haight-Ashbury [1]. Cette maison a permis au producteur Chet Helms d'organiser des concerts [2]. Il présentera au groupe le guitariste James Gurley et plus tard Janis Joplin.

La première apparition officielle du groupe a eu lieu en janvier 1966 au Open Theater à Berkeley [1].

En juin 1966, Big Brother and the Holding Company a fait sa première apparition en public avec Janis Joplin au Avalon Ballroom [3]. Le groupe signe un contrat avec le label indépendant Mainstream Records et enregistre un album auquel il donne son nom en 1967.

Au cours de l'hiver 1966, Chuck Jones quitte le groupe et est remplacé par Dave Getz.

Le groupe connaît la consécration en participant au Festival international de musique pop de Monterey en 1967, partageant notamment l'affiche avec Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Who ou Jimi Hendrix Experience. Big Brother… devient un groupe phare de la scène psychédélique.

En 1968, Janis Joplin et Sam Andrew quittent le groupe pour former Kozmic Blues Band.

Le groupe se reforme en 1969 avec la même formation (excepté Joplin) complétée par Nick Gravenites (chant), Dave Schallock (guitare) et Kathi McDonald (chant). La même formation a continué jusqu'en 1972. Après cette date, le groupe ne s'est reformé qu'une fois en 15 ans, en 1987 [1].
