PaaS[1], de l'anglais Platform as a Service[2], est un modèle de Cloud computing, où :
- l'entreprise maintient uniquement ses applications ;
- le fournisseur Cloud maintient : les runtimes, l'intégration SOA, les bases de données, le logiciel serveur, la virtualisation, le matériel serveur, le stockage et les réseaux.
Ce modèle consiste essentiellement à mettre à disposition des entreprises un environnement middleware immédiatement disponible où l’infrastructure est masquée .
Modèles
- Add-on development facilities Ce modèle permet une customisation des applications SaaS existantes via des API ou tout simplement une interface de configuration. Cela requière une souscription préalable au service SaaS personnalisé.
- Stand-alone environments ou environnement autonome L'objectif de ce modèle est de fournir un environnement de développement. L'environnement inclut en général des services de débogage, test et de développements collaboratifs.
- Application delivery-only environments ou environnements de livraison applicatif Ces environnement offre des services d'hébergement: sécurité, sociabilité, ubiquité, disponibilité.
Les raisons qui freinent l'adoption du PaaS
L’inconvénient majeur de l’utilisation du PaaS est au niveau de la portabilité des services. En effet, il n’existe pas encore des standards régissant ces modèles. Le fournisseur de service pourrait autoriser la portabilité de son service vers un autre fournisseur, mais le coût reste important comparé à la migration entre acteurs d’hébergement conventionnels.
