Le Secret de la planète des singes (Beneath the Planet of the Apes) est un film américain inspiré du roman La Planète des singes de Pierre Boulle, réalisé par Ted Post, sorti sur les écrans en 1970.

C’est la suite directe de La Planète des singes sortie deux ans plus tôt.

Synopsis

Parti du XXe siècle, un engin spatial américain, dont la mission est de retrouver le capitaine George Taylor et son équipage, s'écrase en 3979 sur la planète des singes. L'unique survivant, le lieutenant John C. Brent, découvre que la planète, en plus d'être peuplée de singes évolués, abrite également une race de mutants humains adorateurs de la bombe nucléaire. Ces derniers ont élu domicile dans une cité souterraine, baptisée la "Zone Interdite"...

Commentaire

Charlton Heston accepta de jouer dans ce film à condition que son personnage meure, lui évitant ainsi d'apparaître dans les futures suites.

Dans ce deuxième épisode, le rôle de Cornélius est repris par David Watson, Roddy McDowall étant lié par ailleurs.

Orson Welles fut pressenti pour interpréter Ursus.
