Le Docteur Zaius est un personnage de fiction anthropomorphe qui apparaît dans le roman La planète des singes et le film du même nom. C'est l’orang-outang ministre de la science et gardien de la foi.
Il apparaît également dans le film Le Secret de la planète des singes, où il meurt atomisé.
Dans l'épisode 19 de la saison 7 de la série Les Simpson appelé Un poisson nommé Selma, Troy McClure joue dans une comédie musicale appelée "Arrêtez la planète des singes. Je veux m'en aller." ("Stop the planet of the apes, I want to get off!" dans la version originale) où apparaît le personnage du Dr. Zaius.
Rôle littéraire
Le Dr. Zaius est présenté comme un singe très arrogant et sûr de lui-même. Comme tous les orang-outans, le Dr. Zaius est sage et il soutient la théorie que les hommes et les singes sont apparus par une intervention divine. Il est le grand opposant d’Ulysse Mérou, le personnage principal du roman. Il est aussi présenté comme très conservateur : il ne veut pas accepter les hommes (ou plutôt Mérou) comme des êtres intelligents. À la fin du roman, il est présenté comme la raison, et le danger, qui cause pour Ulysse le retour forcé sur Terre avec sa famille, car il aurait expérimenté sur Mérou, sous prétexte de causes scientifiques.
