Leonard Colebrook est un physiologiste et bactériologiste anglais, membre de la Société royale de Londres, né le 2 mars 1883 et mort le 27 septembre 1967.

La fièvre puerpérale

En 1935, Gerhard Domagk vient de mettre au point le Prontosil (sulfamidochrysoïdine)[1]. La même année, Colebrook démontre l'activité de ce médicament contre le streptocoque hémolytique de la maternité et l'applique avec succès au traitement de la fièvre puerpérale[2].

Désinfection, antisepsie, asepsie

Il fait campagne pour le port des gants, du masque et de la blouse chirurgicaux lors du contact avec les patients. Il prouve également que le chloroxilénol (parachlorométaxylénol) est un désinfectant des mains très supérieur à l'eau savonneuse[3]. Enfin, avec sa sœur Dora, il montre que la probabilité de la transmission des streptocoques par les membres de l'équipe hospitalière est plus élevée que par les patients.

En 1943, l'Unité des brûlés qu'il dirige, rattachée au Conseil de la recherche médicale de Grande Bretagne, est transférée de la Glasgow Royal Infirmary au Birmingham Accident Hospital. C'est là qu'il instaure la pratique de l'isolement des patients en milieu stérile.
