Jean-Baptiste Pompallier, né à Lyon le 11 décembre 1802 et mort à Puteaux le 21 décembre 1871 est un missionnaire mariste français. Envoyé en Océanie en 1837, il évangélise à partir de janvier 1838 pour les catholiques la Nouvelle-Zélande, dont il devient le premier vicaire apostolique en 1842. Il est également en 1848 le premier évêque d'Auckland, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à son retour en France, pour des raisons de santé, en 1869.
