Un excitant est, au sens pharmacologique du terme, une substance chimique ayant des propriétés de stimulation du système nerveux central. Un excitant, ou stimulant agit en augmentant l'activité du système nerveux sympathique, facilitant ou améliorant certaines fonctions de l'organisme.
Certains stimulants sont licites, le thé, le café ou la nicotine, d'autres ne le sont pas, les amphétamines et leurs dérivés par exemple sont illégaux dans la plupart des pays.
