Le classic rag ou rag tout simplement, est le style de ragtime le plus courant. Il se joue en quatre temps avec une accentuation sur les temps faibles, 1er et 3e, de la mesure (contrairement au jazz). Il se caractérise aussi (tout comme tous les styles de ragtime) par l'usage de la syncope. Les trois grands compositeurs de rags furent Scott Joplin, James Scott et Joseph Lamb.
