Composé par Scott Joplin en 1902, The Entertainer est le refrain-phare de l'époque du ragtime.
Il est dédicacé à James Brown and his Mandolin Club (rien à voir avec The Godfather of Soul, mais plutôt à un ensemble constitué exclusivement de mandolines, comme c'était courant à l'époque).[réf. nécessaire]
Comme Roses of Picardy pour la décennie suivante, ce fut la chanson la plus populaire de son époque.
Grâce au film L'Arnaque, ce titre retrouva plus d'un demi-siècle plus tard sa popularité de l’époque des années folles : en 1973, The Entertainer devient numéro trois au hit parade du Billboard magazine.
