Cardston est une petite ville du sud-ouest Alberta. Elle a été colonisée en 1887 par des Mormons provenant du territoire de l'Utah, aux États-Unis.
La ville a été nommée en l'honneur de Charles Ora Card (1839-1906), le gendre de Brigham Young, qui est venu y établir une nouvelle demeure pour l'église de Jésus-Christ des saints des derniers jours et pour fuir la justice américaine (il était accusé de polygamie). Le suffixe « ton » provient de l'anglo-saxon et signifie « ville »[2].
