Ce genre regroupe trois espèces endémiques de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée.
Étymologie
Le nom de ce genre, du latin, Aphanticus, « de terre inculte » et phrynus, « grenouille », a été choisi en référence à l'habitat de ces espèces.
