Zadoc Kahn (18 février 1839, Mommenheim (Bas-Rhin) - 8 décembre 1905, Paris), fut grand rabbin de France de 1889 à sa mort en 1905.

Biographie

Admis au séminaire de Metz en 1856, directeur de l'école préparatoire au séminaire dès 1859, il est nommé en 1867 adjoint du grand rabbin de Paris, Lazare Isidor, puis lui succède en 1868 quand celui-ci est nommé grand rabbin de France. Il est très affecté par la guerre de 1870 et la perte de son Alsace natale. En 1879, il fonde la Société des études juives, creuset du « franco-judaïsme ». En 1889, à la mort d'Isidor, il est nommé grand rabbin de France. Luttant inlassablement contre l'antisémitisme, favorable à la colonisation de la Palestine organisée par Edmond de Rothschild, il joua un rôle important pendant l'Affaire Dreyfus.
