William Laud (Reading 7 octobre 1573 – Londres 10 janvier 1645) était archevêque de Cantorbéry.

Biographie

Issu d'une famille modeste, il est le fils de Nicolas Laude armurier établi à Londres et originaire de Coisevaux (Haute-Saône, France)[1], William Laud s'élève dans la hiérarchie anglicane après des études à Oxford. Ordonné prêtre en 1601, il devient, en 1621, évêque de Saint David's. L'avènement de Charles Ier, lui donne une véritable prééminence sur toute l'Église d'Angleterre: il devient successivement évêque de Londres 1628, chancelier de l'Université d'Oxford, 1629 puis archevêque de Cantorbéry 1633. Il élabore la politique religieuse de Charles Ier et défend avec violence la prérogative royale. Contre les progrès du puritanisme, il prétend imposer une stricte orthodoxie anglicane, brisant les oppositions par la persécution. Il veut obliger l'Écosse à adopter à son tour la discipline épiscopale, mais ne réussit qu'à provoquer une puissante insurrection nationale en 1637 qui ébranle l'absolutisme monarchique. Charles Ier abandonne alors son théologien. Laud, mis en accusation par les Communes en 1640, est emprisonné à la tour de Londres l'année suivante. Ses ennemis obtiennent sa condamnation à mort pour trahison par le Parlement pendant la guerre civile. Il est décapité en 1645.
