William Battie

William Battie, était un médecin psychiatre au XVIIIe siècle. Précurseur du mouvement philanthropique, il a édité en 1758 une publication sur le traitement de la maladie mentale, « un traité sur la folie » (Treatise on madnes).

Biographie

[1]William Battie est né en 1704 en Angleterre. Fils de curé, il a étudié au Eton and King’s College, Cambridge. Il est mort en suivant une course en 1776 et a été enterré à côté de son épouse à Kingston, Surrey.

Il fut médecin Chef de service à l’Hôpital Sainte-Marie de Bethléem, pour soigner les aliénés. A son arrivée, William Battie critique les conditions d’internement et de traitement des insensés, sujet de sa publication en 1758. William Battie est le premier médecin qui plaide pour l’admission dans un hospice comme moyen thérapeutique, et le premier à parler de management moral de l’insensé, une notion qui deviendra plus tard le traitement moral.

Fondateur de l’hôpital Saint Luc, qu’il organise selon les principes philanthropique pour changer la qualité des soins et la vision des malades mentaux :

- Avoir une chambre individuelle pour chaque malade.
- La prise en charge des malades doit être assurée par un personnel qualifié.
- Etc…

Il fut aussi le premier psychiatre à devenir président de l'université royale des médecins. Il est l'origine du terme « battie ».
