Vaisali est une ancienne cité de l'Inde du royaume de Licchavi dans l'État actuel du Bihar. C'est l'un des huit sites historiques connus du bouddhisme.
Géographie
Elle se trouve aujourd'hui à proximité du village de Besarh.
Histoire
Le Bouddha s'y rendit trois années après son éveil et y mit fin à une épidémie de peste. C'était la ville où vivait le très célèbre bodhisattva laïc Vimalakîrti, c'était aussi dans cette ville que le Bouddha Shâkyamouni prédit son parinirvâna.
C'est également dans cette ville qu'eut lieu le deuxième concile un siècle après le Parinirvâna du Bouddha.
