La marque a vu le jour lorsque Michio Makihara a voulu participer aux défis "Zeroyon" Nissan Fairlady Z S30.
En 1982, son atelier de tuning a laissé la place à la société "Technical Service Trial". Quatre ans après, le nom a été raccourci en Trial et la société s'est tournée vers le tuning en général. Trial a remporté le tuner's Cannonball en 1994, a terminé L'American Cannonball en 1999 et reste encore aujourd'hui un participant actif.
Trial créait l'une de ses meilleures voitures de tuning en collaboration de Toyota en 2003, il s'agit de la Trial Celica SS-II (ZZT231).
