  • On appelle township aux États-Unis et au Canada anglophone, l’unité cadastrale de base du maillage fondé sur des carrés d’abord de 1 mile de côté puis jusqu’à 4 (soit environ 6 400 m et 41 km², soit 10 000 acres). Ce quadrillage est très souvent observable même s’il n'a pas partout été respecté, surtout là où le relief est accidenté. Le township donne un bon exemple de création agraire ex nihilo et confère au territoire américain les caractéristiques des paysages au passé récent.
