- Un township, aux États-Unis et au Canada anglophone, est une unité cadastrale de base du maillage mis en place en 1785 à l'ouest des Appalaches. Le township est un découpage de 6 à 54 miles carrés (15,6 km² à 140,4 km²); 36 miles carrés (93 km²) étant la norme moyenne. Le Homestead Act de 1862 a attribué gratuitement 64 ha, soit un quart de section, aux nouveaux colons des grandes plaines. Le township donne un bon exemple de création agraire ex nihilo et confère aux territoires ouest américain les caractéristiques des pays neufs.
- Un township, en Afrique du Sud, est un ghetto réservé aux non-blancs créé à la périphérie des grandes agglomérations pendant l'apartheid. Mais ce terme a également une signification légale précise sans connotations raciales[1],[2], il est utilisé pour désigner un terrain subdivisés en erfs (stands) dans le cadastre[3]. Le township peut aussi signifier un quartier.
