Top League

Le Championnat du Japon de rugby à XV, appelé Top League, est le championnat ouvert aux meilleurs clubs du rugby à XV japonais. Le tenant du titre est Suntory Sungoliath (vainqueur 2008).

Historique

Afin de promouvoir le rugby, d'accroître le niveau du championnat national, la fédération japonaise (Japan Rugby Football Union, JRFU) décide de réorganiser le fonctionnement de ses compétitions, douze clubs disputent la compétition majeure à compter de la saison 2003-2004 avec un système de promotion et de relégation entre les niveaux. Lors de la saison 2006-2007, le championnat accueille deux clubs supplémentaires et copie le Super 14 et le Top 14.

L'architecte de cet effort est Hiroaki Shukuzawa qui a ressenti le besoin de réformer le championnat local pour atteindre le niveau professionnel, tenter d'être compétitif au niveau national avec des joueurs plus aguerris au sein de l'équipe du Japon de rugby à XV et pouvoir prétendre organiser une Coupe du monde de rugby à XV.

De nombreux joueurs originaires des îles du Pacifique, d'Australie et de Nouvelle-Zélande disputent la Top League, comme Tony Brown et George Gregan.

Clubs disputant la saison 2009-2010 (septième édition)

IBM Big Blue et Yokogawa Atlastars sont automatiquement reléguées pour avoir terminé aux deux dernières places de la précédente édition.

Ricoh et Honda sont promues.

Kyuden et Sanix se maintiennent en Top League en remportant les barrages de promotion et de relégation.
