The Beta Band était un groupe écossais formé autour de John Maclean, Richard Greentree, Steve Mason et de Robin Jones.

Bénéficiant d'un grand succès critique, le groupe a atteint le statut culte chez les fervents adeptes de la musique de scène underground et expérimentale. Leur style a été décrit comme étant folk-hop, un mélange de folk, rock, trip-hop, de brouillage et d'expérimentation.

Formé en 1996 par les musiciens d'Edinbourg Steve Mason (chant, guitare) et Gordon Anderson le groupe nommé un premier temps The Pigeons a été rejoint plus tard par Robin Jones (batterie) et John Maclean (DJ, sampler, claviers). Leur premier album simplement intitulé The Beta Band sort en 1999. Le single "To You Alone"/"Sequinsizer", paru en 2000 est couronné "disque de la semaine" par le NME. En 2004, le groupe publie son dernier album studio Heroes to Zeros. L'un des titres "Liquid Bird" comporte un sample de Siouxsie & The Banshees.[1]

En août 2004, à la surprise de leurs fans, le groupe annonça sa séparation et fit son dernier concert le 4 décembre 2004 à Edinbourg.

Depuis la scission, Steve Mason, se poursuit avec son projet solo King Biscuit Time, tandis que Robin Jones et John Maclean sont devenus The Aliens avec l'ex-membre des Beta Band Gordon Anderson (alias Lone Pigeon). Richard Greentree travaille avec son nouveau groupe The General and Duchess Collins.
