The Times Higher Education Supplement (parfois dit The Times Higher ou The THES) est un journal mensuel basé à Londres spécialisé dans le domaine des études supérieures dont le propriétaire est TSL Education, une division de News International (en date d'octobre 2005). Ce journal est connu pour son palmarès annuel des universités, publié depuis novembre 2004 [1].

Les universités les mieux notées sont souvent américaines ou britanniques. Vu les résultats semblables du palmarès publié par l'Université Jiao Tong de Shanghai, l'explication la plus raisonnable est que la recherche de pointe dans les hautes technologies se fait en anglais et donc, soit que ces travaux sont mieux connus, soit que ces universités attirent naturellement les meilleurs étudiants et chercheurs; les deux explications n'étant pas incompatibles. On avance aussi le fait qu'à cause du morcellement des universités (continentales) européennes et de leurs équipes de recherche, aucune de ces dernières n'atteint le seuil critique étudié et qu'ainsi, les critères de ces classements favoriseraient les universités érigées sur le modèle anglo-saxon.
