The Mamas & the Papas est un groupe de rock américain qui a enregistré et effectué des concerts de 1965 à 1968. Il s'est brièvement reconstitué en 1971.

Au début des années 1960, les Mamas & Papas était un des rares groupes américains, avec les Beach Boys et The Byrds, qui pouvait soutenir la comparaison, commercialement parlant, avec les groupes de rock britanniques.

Biographie

Le groupe était composé de John Phillips, Cass Elliot, Denny Doherty et Michelle Phillips (les deux Phillips étaient mariés, au début de l'activité du groupe).

Il s’est formé à partir des groupes de folk « Even Dozen Jug Band » et « Mugwumps » qui ont donné lieu aux groupes The Lovin' Spoonful et The Mamas & the Papas. Appelé à l'origine The Magic Circle, le groupe chercha un nom plus facile à retenir pour la sortie de son premier album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. Cass et Michelle ont pensé à se faire appeler Mamas, les deux hommes ont été d’accord pour Papas, d’où le nouveau nom du groupe.

Leur premier album contient leurs deux titres les plus connus, California Dreamin' et Monday Monday, respectivement classés quatrième et en tête des charts américains au moment de leur sortie.

Le groupe connut des conflits liés aux relations qu’entretenaient Michelle Phillips et Denny Doherty. Pour compliquer un peu plus la situation, Michelle tomba amoureuse de Gene Clark, du groupe The Byrds, ce qui aboutit à l’exclusion de Michelle du groupe en juin 1966. Elle fut remplacée par Jill Gibson pour l’enregistrement du second album, simplement intitulé The Mamas & the Papas. Rapidement, il devint évident qu’elle ne faisait pas l’affaire et Michelle fut réintégrée dans le groupe à la demande de John.

John et Michelle se réconcilièrent par la suite, et le troisième album du groupe, Deliver, sortit en février 1967 et atteignit la deuxième place des charts. Toutefois, Denny vécut mal la réconciliation des Phillips et devint alcoolique. En juin de la même année, le groupe fit la clôture du Festival international de musique pop de Monterey, mais ils ne furent pas très brillants, étant trop pris par l'organisation du festival pour répéter.

Le groupe étant en manque d’inspiration, leur compagnie de disque sortit une compilation de leurs Greatest Hits. Il s’est officiellement séparé en juillet 1968, après un quatrième album intitulé The Papas & the Mamas. Selon Cass Elliott, la raison de la rupture était son souhait de faire une carrière solo.

Un dernier album, People Like Us, sortit en 1971 pour raisons contractuelles, le groupe ayant signé pour cinq albums chez Dunhill Records.

Après la séparation du groupe, Michelle Phillips s'est lancée dans le cinéma après un album solo passé inaperçu. Cass Elliot, dont la carrière solo connut un certain succès, est morte d’une crise cardiaque, après un concert, le 29 juillet 1974. John Phillips, après avoir enregistré un remarquable album solo à la toute fin des années soixante-dix (John, the Wolfking of L.A.), recréa, dans les années 1980, The New Mamas & the Papas, avec Denny Doherty, sa fille Mackenzie Phillips et Spanky McFarlane, et est mort de problèmes cardiaques le 18 mars 2001. Denny Doherty a été animateur d'émissions de variété au Canada et est mort le 19 janvier 2007 d'un anévrisme abdominal.
