Le groupe est connu par ses positions et ses textes engagés, faisant ainsi parti des groupes contestant la politique économique et sociale de Margaret Thatcher dans les années 80. Dès leur premier album, les Housemartins ne ratent pas l'occasion d'y exprimer leur point de vue:
- "Dont try gate crashing a party full of bankers. Burn the house down! Take Jesus - Take Marx - Take Hope"[1]
- "For too long the ruling class have enjoyed an extended New Years Eve Party, whilst we can only watch, faces pressed up against the glass"[1]
Après la fin du groupe, certains partirent fonder The Beautiful South, et Norman Cook se lança dans divers projets solo dont Beats International, Pizzaman, Mighty Dub Katz et Fatboy Slim.
