  • Le tournage s'est déroulé aux studios de Shepperton.
  • Le film s'inspire de l'histoire vraie des tueurs en série William Burke et William Hare, qui commirent dix-sept meurtres à Édimbourg au XIXe siècle dans le but revendre les corps au docteur Robert Knox, qui était alors limité dans ses recherches par les autorités anglaises qui n'autorisaient que l'utilisation des corps de criminels exécutés. Le cinéma s'intéressa à de nombreuses reprises à leur histoire : Le Récupérateur de cadavres (1945), The Greed of William Hart (1948), The Anatomist (1961), Burke and Hare (1972) ou encore Le Docteur et les Assassins (1985).
