L'action de grâce est une attitude de reconnaissance envers Dieu : l'homme "comblé de toutes sortes de bénédictions spirituelles dans le Christ" reconnaît de quel amour il est aimé de Dieu et l'en remercie. Depuis une vingtaine d'années, les chrétiens ont remis en honneur pour évoquer la messe, le mot "Eucharistie", qui signifie action de grâce, louange et joie.

Origines

Les actions de grâces sont fréquentes dès l'Ancien Testament. On en trouve dans le livre de Néhémie (Ne 12. 46), dans les livres des Maccabées (1 M 4, 56 et 2 M 3, 33), dans Isaïe (Is 51. 3), dans Jérémie (Jr 17. 26 et Jr 33. 11), dans la première (1Co 1. 4) et la deuxième épître aux Corinthiens (2Co 9. 12), dans l'épître aux Colossiens (Col 3. 17), dans la première (1Th 3. 9) et la deuxième épître aux Thessaloniciens (2Th 1. 3 ; 2Th 2. 13), dans la première épître à Timothée (1Tm 2. 1), et dans l'Apocalypse de Jean (Ap 4. 9).

Par exemple, dans la première épître aux Corinthiens, Saint Paul mentionne l'action de grâce :

« Je rends à mon Dieu de continuelles actions de grâces à votre sujet, pour la grâce de Dieu qui vous a été faite en Jésus-Christ. »

Signification

Dans le catholicisme, action de grâce est synonyme d'eucharistie.

Selon le catéchisme de l'Église catholique [1] :

« L'Eucharistie, sacrement de notre salut accompli par le Christ sur la Croix, est aussi un sacrifice de louange en action de grâce pour l'œuvre de la création. Dans le sacrifice eucharistique, toute la création aimée par Dieu est présentée au Père à travers la mort et la résurrection du Christ. Par le Christ, l'Église peut offrir le sacrifice de louange en action de grâce pour tout ce que Dieu a fait de bon, de beau, et de juste dans la création et l'humanité.
L'Eucharistie est un sacrifice d'action de grâce au Père, une bénédiction par laquelle l'Église exprime sa reconnaissance à Dieu pour tous ses bienfaits, pour tout ce qu'il a accompli par la création, la rédemption et la sanctification. Eucharistie signifie d'abord "action de grâce". »
