Tanit est une déesse d'origine phénicienne chargée de veiller à la fertilité, aux naissances et à la croissance. Elle était la déesse tutélaire de la ville de Serepta et son culte prit de l'ampleur à Carthage où elle était nommée Oum. Elle était la parèdre du dieu Ba'al Hammon.

Tanit est dénommée Tanit péné Baal (littéralement « face de baal ») après environ 400 av. J.-C., ainsi que Tinit[1] ou Tinêt.

Tanit a été interprétée par les Romains comme une forme particulière de Junon : Iuno Caelestis, vite devenue Caelestis.

Selon certaines sources, Didon reine de Carthage serait un avatar de Tanit.

Signe de Tanit

Le signe de Tanit pourrait être un symbole représentant une personne priant, les bras levés vers le ciel. Il peut avoir une signification apotropaïque. On le retrouve très fréquemment sur les stèles carthaginoises. Denis Lépée propose une théorie étonnante sur l'influence du signe de Tanit dans l'architecture des grands lieux de pouvoir[2].

Certains voient dans la croix d'Agadez (symbole Touareg du Niger) la préservation du signe de Tanit.

Tanit est assimilée à Astarté chez les phéniciens, Ishtar chez les babyloniens, Innana chez les summériens, Vénus chez les romains, Aphrodite chez les grecs, Isis chez les égyptiens, Anaïtis chez les libyens, Dercéto chez les syriens, et Mylitta chez les chaldéens d'Assyrie.
