Sens et origine du nom
Prénom d'origine germanique, Tancrède est une forme savante de Tankrad basée sur le latin Tancredus, formé des racines danc, « pensée », et rad, « conseil ». Peu répandu, tombé en désuétude avant la fin du Moyen Âge, Tancrède s’éclipsa des usages avant de revenir à la mode au XIXe siècle puis de retomber en désuétude au XXe siècle.
On le retrouve dans le nom de famille normand Tanqueray et dans les toponymes Tancarville et Trancrainville.
