Îlam tamoul (Tamoul: தமிழ் ஈழம், tamil īlam) est le nom donné par les Tamouls et les Tigres de libération de l'Îlam tamoul au territoire revendiqué par ces derniers au Sri Lanka dans le cadre de la guerre civile qui meurtrit ce pays.

Selon les LTTE, le cadre institutionnel démocratique du Sri Lanka actuel n’offre aucune garantie aux minorités linguistiques et religieuses, et seule la création d’un État séparé (le cas échéant associé au reste de l’île) peut répondre à cette attente.

La force du séparatisme réside dans sa capacité de mobilisation d’une jeunesse tamoule privée d’emplois publics par une politique de quotas pro-bouddhiste et par un clientélisme qui joue en faveur de la majorité cinghalaise[1].

Un État « tigre » de facto indépendant existait déjà au nord du pays[2] avant l'offensive gouvernemental de 2007 qui a conduit à la chute de la capitale début janvier 2009.
