Stephen McCauley (né le 26 juin 1955) est un écrivain américain.

Stephen McCauley a grandi dans la région de Boston puis a étudié à l'Université du Vermont et, pendant un an, à l'université de Nice. Après son diplôme, il a eu différents emplois : il a ainsi travaillé dans des hôtels, des jardins d'enfants, des magasins diététiques, et dans une agence de voyage pendant quelques années. Ces expériences très diversifiées (il a même enseigné le yoga et a tenu un stand de glaces) ont largement nourri le contexte de ses romans.

Dans les années 1980, après son installation à Brooklyn, il a suivi des études d'écriture à l'université de Columbia, et suite à la suggestion de l'écrivain Stephen Koch, a entrepris l'écriture de son premier roman.

Plusieurs de ses textes ont été publiés dans Gay Community News (Boston), Bay Windows, Boston Phoenix, New York Times Book Review, Vogue, House & Garden (magazine), Details (magazine), Vanity Fair, Harper's, et Travel and Leisure.

Il vit actuellement à Cambridge, Massachusetts.
