L'album est enregistré aux DARP Studios, Purple Dragon et Doppler Bosstown Studios à Atlanta, en Géorgie, de 1992 à 1994. Les thémes de Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik traitent du proxénétisme et le style de vie qu'il implique. Le style "gangsta" en vedette sur les paroles de l'album ont été abandonnés par OutKast sur leurs albums plus tard, qui ont porté sur des thèmes moraux.

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik est devenu disque de platine le 5 avril 1995, avec l'aide du hit single Player's Ball.
