August Hlond, né le 5 juillet 1881 près de Myslowitz en Silésie allemande (aujourd'hui Mysłowice en Pologne) et mort le 22 octobre 1948 à Varsovie, est un salésien, qui fut évêque de Katowice en 1925, puis archevêque de Gniezno et de Poznan en 1926, donc primat de Pologne et archevêque de Varsovie fin 1946.

Biographie

Né dans une famille modeste, il fut élevé dans le patriotisme polonais. Il fut consacré évêque en 1926 et créé cardinal par le pape Pie XI lors du consistoire du 20 juin 1927. Il vécut en France à Lourdes de 1940 à 1944 et fut arrêté par la Gestapo du 3 février 1944 au 1er avril 1945. Il était fermement anti-communiste. Son action, dans l'expulsion du clergé catholique allemand de Silésie et de Breslau à partir de mai 1945, fut critiquée par les catholiques allemands.

Il a fondé, avec le père Posadzy, la Société du Christ pour les émigrants de Pologne en 1932.

Son procès en béatification est ouvert.
