Pendant la période Samhan les trois confédérations de Mahan, Jinhan et Byonhan dominaient le sud de la péninsule coréenne.

Samhan signifie les Trois Han, et désigne ces trois confédérations. La période est parfois appelée la proto-période des Trois Royaumes. On considère habituellement que la période Samhan commence avec la chute du royaume Chosŏn-Wiman, en 108 av. J.-C., et qu'elle s'achève au IIIe siècle, après le début de la période des Trois Royaumes.

Les Trois Hans

Les Samhan sont généralement considérés comme des confédérations de villes fortifiées. Dans chacune apparaît une classe dirigeante, dont le pouvoir repose sur un mélange de politique et de chamanisme. Si chaque État possède ses propres dirigeants, aucun ordre de succession systématique n'est mis en évidence.
