Ash Can School
L’Ash Can School (ou Ashcan School), littéralement « école de la poubelle[1]. », est un style de peinture américaine réaliste du début du XXe siècle. Elle est connue pour la représentation de scènes de la vie quotidienne des milieux pauvres des villes. Elle est souvent confondue avec le « groupe des huit » (The Eights), des peintres réunis autour de Robert Henri :

Les Eight ont exposé pour la première fois en tant que groupe en 1908 à la galerie Macbeth de New York, mais on se rappelle toujours d'eux en tant que groupe bien que leur travail était très divers en termes de modèle et thèmes. D’autres artistes furent assimilés à cette école : Edward Hopper et George Bellows, qui furent les étudiants de Robert Henri à la New York School of Arts, mais également le photographe Jacob Riis.
