Le nandou est un oiseau d'Amérique du Sud, voisin de l'autruche. Il s'agit du plus grand oiseau d'Amérique, les adultes pesant environ 20 à 30 kilos.

Le nandou d'Amérique est une espèce en danger. Il est en effet chassé par les agriculteurs, car les nandous mangent certaines récoltes. De plus, leurs œufs sont récoltés pour être mangés et leur habitat se rétrécit constamment.

Ils vivent de préférence dans des zones où il y a de la grande végétation et vivent près d'un point d'eau durant la période de reproduction. Les mâles défendent alors vigoureusement leur territoire.

Les nandous ont un excellent système immunitaire qui leur permet de soigner rapidement leurs blessures. La graisse de nandou est utilisée comme pommade anti-inflammatoire et sa viande est consommée en Amérique du Nord comme supplément énergétique.

Vitesse de pointe: 65 km/h, après l'autruche, le nandou est le 2 éme oiseaux terrestre le plus rapide.
