Le proto-roman est la langue de transition entre le latin vulgaire et le roman.[réf. nécessaire] En réalité, la transition du latin vulgaire au roman est une lente évolution populaire : les habitants de la Gaule ont toujours eu l'impression de parler la même langue que leurs ancêtres, mais en quelques siècles, elle était devenue méconnaissable. On apelle donc protoroman, cette langue en continuel changement qui relie le latin vulgaire et la langue romane[réf. nécessaire].
