Le petrichor est lié à l'odeur particulière, habituellement agréable, que prend la terre après la pluie. Ce terme a été créé en 1964 par deux géologues australiens, J. Bear et R. G. Thomas dans la revue anglophone Nature (numéro 993/2), dénommant ainsi le liquide huileux secrété par certaines plantes, puis absorbé par les sols et roches argileux pendant les périodes sèches, et qui, après la pluie, dégage une odeur agréable en se combinant avec la géosmine.
Formé à partir du grec petros signifiant pierre et ichor désignant le sang des dieux dans la mythologie grecque.
