Le Mexican standoff (en français, impasse mexicaine) est une forme de confrontation que nul ne peut vraiment gagner. La crise des missiles de Cuba en est un bon exemple, mais le Mexican standoff est plus présent dans la culture populaire américaine que politique.
Au cinéma, il s'agit généralement de deux personnages (ou plus), ayant des intérêts différents, qui se menacent mutuellement (notamment avec des armes à feu), scène typique du western spaghetti (cf. l'affrontement final du film de Sergio Leone, Le Bon, la Brute et le Truand). L'impasse mexicaine est également très volontiers utilisée par John Woo (The Killer, Hard Boiled, Hard Target, Face Off) ou Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds) dans leurs films. On peut aussi voir un Mexican standoff à 5 dans Pirates des Caraïbes 3. On retrouve aussi cette impasse à trois reprises dans la pièce The Lieutenant of Inishmore de Martin McDonagh. Dans le film Transformers 3 : La Face cachée de la Lune, les Autobots Ironhide et Sideswipe se retrouvent dans une impasse mexicaine avec deux Decepticons, ce que Sideswipe ne manquera pas de faire remarquer ("Un petit face-à-face genre impasse mexicaine ?").
