- 1940, Earl Bakken crée avec son beau-frère Palmer Hermundslie un atelier de réparation d'appareils médicaux dans un garage. Il découvre dans une revue les plans d'un métronome électrique. C'est le déclic: délivrer une impulsion à un rythme régulier permettrait de lutter contre des problèmes d'arythmie cardiaque.
- 1949, il fonde Medtronic
- 1957, le premier pacemaker (créateur de rythme) portable.
- 1961, déménagement à St. Anthony Village (Minneapolis)
